Repeat.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Matthew Carlyle, President and CEO, adMare BioInnovations<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Western University, David Edgell developed a breakthrough that could change how we tackle diseases at their genetic source. First-generation gene editors are good at breaking genes, but not repairing them. Edgell\u2019s unique approach uses an enzyme that makes two precise cuts instead of one, creating the potential to target disease-causing genetic errors more accurately while reducing unintended effects. It is the kind of breakthrough that opens new possibilities for diseases where the underlying genetic cause remains beyond our reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Edgell\u2019s discovery is the foundation of Specific Biologics, a Toronto company that is progressing towards Series A financing to advance its lead program for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, into a first-in-human clinical trial. For patients, the stakes are enormous. ALS is a devastating disease that takes away a person\u2019s ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually breathe. Current treatments do not address the underlying genetic cause. Specific Biologics is initially targeting the most common genetic form of ALS, caused by a harmful DNA repeat expansion that its Dualase\u00ae gene-editing platform is designed to remove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what success looks like: Canadian science built into a Canadian company that delivers meaningful new treatments for patients and is backed by Canadian investors who keep more value here at home. If we are serious about building globally competitive anchor companies, these are the examples we need to replicate at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building domestic innovative pharmaceutical anchor companies <a href=\"https:\/\/admarebio.com\/news-events\/news-insights\/the-admare-institute-examines-the-critical-role-of-anchor-companies-in-building-globally-competitive-life-sciences-innovation-ecosystems\/\">is something adMare Bioinnovations has long championed<\/a>, and is a central goal of the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Sector Task Force recommendations. The Task Force estimates that just two or three anchor companies could generate $5 to $10 billion in annual revenue and more than 10,000 jobs. With supply chains and trade relationships shifting, this matters for both health and economic security. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, anchor companies don\u2019t appear overnight. They grow from a deep pipeline of <em>investable<\/em> Canadian companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, that pipeline is under pressure. Canadian life sciences venture capital recorded its worst half on record in 2026. Globally, biotech is concentrating in fewer, larger, and more de-risked deals &#8211; creating a growing funding gap for early-stage companies. Compounding the challenge, Canada\u2019s conversion gap between pre-seed\/seed and Series A financing has been widening since 2021. In other words, we are creating companies, but too few are making it to the next stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building an investable life sciences company is complex and capital intensive. It requires experienced drug developers who understand both the science and the commercial opportunity, along with the expertise, hands-on support and early capital to prove the technology, reach critical development milestones and attract larger private investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is we <em>already know how<\/em> to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last decade, the federal government has partnered with adMare, a national engine for life science company creation and growth with operations in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto. Their model is straightforward &#8211; collaborate with Canadian researchers and institutions, <em>validate<\/em> the science and commercial potential, <em>incubate<\/em> the company through early development, and <em>accelerate<\/em> growth through continued investment. Then, re-invest returns to do it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specific Biologics shows the model in action. Over five years, adMare worked alongside its founders to turn promising science into an investable company \u2013 building its R&amp;D strategy, co-leading seed financing with Lumira Ventures to execute it, and providing hands-on research and operational support needed to develop the technology, build the team, and attract Series A investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not an isolated example. Of the 31 companies that have been part of adMare\u2019s direct investment portfolio, 16 have crossed the \u201cvalley of death\u201d and raised substantial private risk capital, a conversion rate roughly three times the Canadian average and comparable to leading U.S. benchmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This supply of investment-ready companies is critical. Government is already advancing several downstream tools to support company scaling, including BDC\u2019s new Life Sciences Fund and the Growth Venture Capital Catalyst Initiative. Their success will depend on a continual supply of investment-ready Canadian companies to fund. Two-thirds of adMare\u2019s portfolio are already backed by leading Canadian life science venture investors. This, along with adMare\u2019s significant investments in national lab infrastructure and talent development programs, help to root growth here at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">adMare offers exactly the kind of approach the Task Force recommends expanding to support the early commercialization journey, and for good reason: the return on public capital is compelling. Since 2017, adMare has invested more than $120 million of federally supported capital into companies across the country with every dollar leveraged 14 times with capital from private investors, exceeding targets. In total, these companies have raised $2.5 billion in private risk capital. The portfolio has also generated significant realized returns that have been fully reinvested to build the next generation of Canadian companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Ottawa prepares its budget and its response to the Task Force, its commercialization measures should start where anchor companies begin. A five-year, $200 million investment in adMare\u2019s proven model would strengthen the pipeline now, while future investment returns can help sustain it over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every company will become an anchor company. However, building more companies with deep domestic foundations, like Specific Biologics, the better our odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada won\u2019t get its anchor companies by waiting for them to appear. It will get them by building the pipeline that produces them. We have the science. We have the model. The opportunity is&nbsp; in front of us: turn more Canadian science into Canadian companies that change patients\u2019 lives around the world and build prosperity here at home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Validate, incubate, accelerate.
